DIANA KRALL and Paul McCartney - 2014

Helt ny Paul McCartney-komposition på Diana Kralls kommande pop-album!

Diana Krall, mest känd som jazzpianist, sångerska, kompositör och gift med Elvis Costello, vill liksom Paul McCartney byta musikstil. Paul bytte ju lite från pop till jazz i samband med skivan Kisses On The Bottom,medan Diana vill gå från jazz till pop!

Som bekant ackompanjerar hon Paul McCartney på vissa av hans inspelningar på konsertfilmen ’Live Kisses” från 2012, som också finns tillgänglig på DVD.

Nu planerar Diana Krall alltså att ge ut ett lite mer poppigt album – första albumet som hon ger ut på över två år. Det senaste albumet från 2012 heter Glad Rag Doll och gick in på sjätteplatsen på Billboards 200-lista samt på första platsen på listan över jazzalbum.

Diana arbetar för tillfället med David Foster för att ta fram demolåtar (det har blivit nästan 20 låtar framtagna hittills!) till det kommande albumet. Albumet kommer att innehålla låtar som är skrivna av Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot och Paul McCartney. När det gäller Paul McCartneys låt, så är det en av de låtar som Paul hade skrivit i samband med att han skapade albumet Kisses On The Bottom. Diana Krall hade varit med och arrangerat låten, vilken tydligen spelades in, men aldrig kom ut.

Diana Krall: ”I still had a copy of the music and I asked him if he was OK if I did the song for my record and he said ‘Sure,’ so we recorded that and it came out just gorgeous. It’s a new Paul McCartney song that’s never been recorded that I’m pretty honored to have.”

Magical evening with Diana Krall

My wife Brenda Biasutti and I hanging out with Diana Krall after her terrific concert in la belle ville.

My wife Brenda and I were at Place des Arts in Montréal last night to attend a concert by Diana Krall. Some dear friends and family members joined us for a memorable evening.

The concert was superb. Diana and her band played a wide variety of music from 1920s jazz to American standards to blues. 3,000 people were in attendance and Diana connected musically with every one of us. Her fingers flew over the keyboard and her voice was flawless. She put her own unique interpretation on original songs as well as compositions by Tom Waits, Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell.

I admired how Diana and her five band mates worked together. It was obvious that they enjoy and respect each other. I was pleased to see that such teamwork produces the highest quality performance.

Besides being my favourite musician, Diana Krall is also a dear friend of our family. Unfortunately we see each other only rarely. When my wife and I do get together with Diana, we cherish the occasion.

I particularly cherished an occasion a few years ago when Diana and I worked together with students and teachers of Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary. It was a marvelous educational project. Over an academic year, the Beaverbrook students researched, wrote, edited, illustrated and composed the music for a book entitled ‘From Blue to Red’.

The book was targeted by the Lord Beaverbrook High School students for an elementary school readership. It tells an imaginative story of the first human mission to Mars. www.FromBlueToRed.net. For the students, it was an extraordinary learning experience.

The leaders of the project were teacher Ross McIntyre and artistic director Samantha Whelan Kotkas. Both are University of Calgary alumni. Compared to the central roles played by Ross and Samantha, the contributions of Diana Krall and me (i.e. narration of the story) were small.

Thanks to Ross and Samantha, the ‘From Blue To Red’ project is now established as a benchmark in Alberta for cross-curricular learning. If you have an interest in pedagogy and can spare 20 minutes, it would be worth your time to view the video documentary (also student-produced!) about the project. The documentary explains why and how the book was made.

I appreciated Diana Krall taking time from her busy schedule to participate in ‘From Blue To Red’. She understands that incredible things will be accomplished when students from art, science and music come together in a learning environment.

My wife and I enjoyed seeing Diana this evening. We beamed when we heard her sing and play. She brings joy to our world. In my next life, I think I’d like to be a jazz musician – the teamwork and creative aspects appeal to me. And I suspect that Diana would consider becoming an astronaut. She is a strong promoter of space exploration and enjoys pushing back all kinds of frontiers. Diana Krall is a national treasure and a good friend.

Diana Krall à côté de ses pompes à la Philharmonie

La Philharmonie de Luxembourg était archicomble, lundi soir, pour la venue de Diana Krall. La file d’attente pour tenter d’obtenir un des derniers tickets disponibles pour la soirée était d’ailleurs bien plus longue que d’habitude. Une salle bien pleine pour un concert en mode mineur. La Canadienne, qui nous avait bien régalés lors de ses deux précédents passages au Kirchberg, en 2009 et 2012, semblait bien fatiguée, en ce lundi soir, à côté de ses pompes.

Arrivée sur scène en toute discrétion à la suite de ses musiciens, elle s’est installée devant son piano pour ne plus quitter son tabouret pendant l’heure et demie de concert. Elle, d’habitude si communicative, radotait, entre chaque chanson, de petites phrases à peine audibles, mal assurées, souvent sans grand intérêt… comme cela peut arriver, parfois, en toute fin d’une soirée trop arrosée.

Vraiment pas du meilleur effet. Mais, à la limite, on pourrait lui pardonner si, à côté de ça, elle offrait de grands moments de musique. Mais, là encore, c’est la douche froide. Pas toujours dans le ton, en train, bien souvent, de chercher sa voix – un comble pour une chanteuse avec son expérience –, elle semblait chanter surtout pour elle, dans sa bulle, ou tout au plus, pour ses proches installés autour de son piano lors d’une réunion de famille, oubliant au passage qu’elle se trouvait là devant un vrai public.

Et puis, chanter quoi? Un patchwork sans saveur de standards de la pop des années 70, des Mamas and Papas à Bob Dylan, en passant par Tom Waits. Et même quand elle reprend Nat King Cole, elle semble s’ennuyer, sans envie. Bref, on cherche encore le fil rouge de cette soirée.
Certes, Anthony Wilson à la guitare et Karriem Riggins au violon ont offert quelques solos magnifiques, mais c’était les seuls moments vraiment intéressants de ce concert qui ressemblait vraiment trop à une simple soirée karaoké. Vraiment dommage.
