DIANA KRALL To Feature New Paul McCartney Song On Album

PHILADELPHIA, PA

Diana Krall is in the studio currently working on her next studio album. The project will be her first in two years and Krall is not holding back with her newest release.

Krall’s album is set to feature records from a number of musical names. She is currently scheduled to have tracks Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot. She will also be including a new song by Paul McCartney.

Krall worked with McCartney on his ‘Kisses on the Bottom,’ album in 2012. There was a particular composition that McCartney chose not to use for the album and Krall took notice. Krall asked McCartney is he would object to her recording the song for her next project and the former Beatle obliged.

The upcoming album is being described as a pop record and Krall has been working on demos with music producer, David Foster. Foster is a veteran in the music industry and is looking to guide Krall to a successful studio album.

Krall is hoping to release the album in the fall of this year. The collection of songs is still untitled to this point.

Diana Krall is breaking out the big guns for her next studio album, her first in two years. The Grammy-winning artist is working with David Foster on demos for a "pop record" that tentatively includes tracks by Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and a new composition by Paul McCartney.

Speaking with The Oregonian ahead of a concert date at Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Krall described the McCartney song as an outtake from his 2012 "Kisses on the Bottom" album, a collection of traditional-pop and jazz songs that she helped arrange.

"I still had a copy of the music and I asked him if he was OK if I did the song for my record and he said 'Sure,' so we recorded that and it came out just gorgeous," she said. "It's a new Paul McCartney song that's never been recorded that I'm pretty honored to have."

Krall said she and Foster have demoed 18 tracks in seven days, and that she's letting the veteran producer handle most of the piano parts. "I didn't want any re-harms or jazz chords in it," she said. "I wanted it to be our take on the same changes that they wrote, just a different rendition. It's a pop record. That's a new thing for me."

She said she was inspired to start the project after briefly touring with Young. "I met [Heart's] Ann Wilson at [Young's] Bridge School Benefit and started thinking about all that music."

Krall hopes to release the untitled album this fall. It would be her first studio effort since 2012's "Glad Rag Doll," produced by T Bone Burnett, which debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on the Jazz Albums chart.

DIANA KRALL, the opening act

...First time I’ve seen Diana Krall. She opened with a powerful version of Dylan’s ‘Every Grain Of Sand’, complete with soulful gospel piano, followed by another powerful version of ‘Don’t Fence Me In’ . . . and it just went from there. At one point she went off on a rather amusing short monologue about how she used to play his songs in Nanaimo, British Columbia as a young girl, and now here she was playing his piano. She then completed the thought by saying that she ‘just might have to steal Neil’s piano’. And her piano playing – much of it was literally like a virtuouso who’d just been let out of a lunatic asylum. Some of it rapturously beautiful, and other of it like a cascading collision of multiple key signatures and styles. Very, very expressive – particularly on one of Tom Waits’ delightfully mad tunes that she did. She also did tunes by Warren Zevon and Randy Newman. Overall she seems like a real character – a smokey-voiced chanteuse who was just as offbeat and quirky, if not moreso, than Neil and his musings. Not too hard on the eyes either.
