London Fashion week is usually anything but an intimate affair. Swarms of attendees swap the all-black ensembles of New York in favour of more attention-grabbing, soon-to-be trends in attempt to make a scene, or at least make the blogs. Helping kick-off London fashion week, De Beers’s Moments in Light offered an intimate evening in celebration of women and their efforts in bringing support and attention to the organization Women for Women International.

In continuation of the Moments in Light series, this year the jeweller presented portraits by Mary McCartney (yes, that McCartney), bringing together a dynamic and accomplished cast of women in support of the international charity. Zaha Hadid, Liya Kebede, Diana Krall, and Karen Mok joined the campaign, showing their support for women in communities affected by conflict. The portraits were unveiled at London’s iconic Claridge’s Hotel where Canadian jazz pianist and singer Krall also performed.

Photographer Mary McCartey, who also acts as curator for the campaign, constructed images of the women that reflect their individual talents: renowned British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid was photographed in her London design studio, surrounded by the organic and dramatic elements that her practise comprises of; Krall was portrayed in a modern studio setting, emphasizing the five-time Grammy Award winner’s conviction and powerful presence.

The partnership between De Beers and Women for Women International reflects a commitment to the 25 women each in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iraq, and Rwanda. The project includes a year-long training program for job skills education, providing some of the most marginalized community members with the ability to earn wages and support their families. Additionally, these initiatives educate women on their individual rights, nutrition, and healthcare.

Highlighting the strength and power of women internationally, Moments in Light perhaps represents a most uniting and meaningful trend worthy of notice.

Moments in Light

Diana Krall is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer, known for her contralto vocals. Diana is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debuting at the top of the Billboard Jazz albums and has won 5 Grammy Awards.

Diana's passion and talent embodies everything that our Moments in Light celebration honours. It is through the inspiring support of women during her career that has allowed Diana to succeed allowing her in turn to inspire others.

 Diana Krall was photographed in New York by Moments in Light curator and photographer Mary McCartney, the modern and bright setting captures Diana's strong and empowering presence.

HOW DID YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS PROJECT WITH DE BEERS AND MARY MCCARTNEY COME ABOUT?

I learned about the campaign through my work and friendship with Mary McCartney.

WAS THERE A PARTICULAR STORY FROM WOMEN FOR WOMEN THAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME INVOLVED?

I found that it was important to read all of the stories from the different women that Women for Women support. The circumstances and details might be very different, but I simply could not place one above all the others.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED MOST WHILE WORKING ON THIS CAMPAIGN?

I have learned that women need the support of other women to succeed. Together women can find the strength and courage to tackle the problems and the challenges that women are uniquely given to bear.

WOMEN FOR WOMEN HELPS WOMEN TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES, WHAT DOES BEING INVOLVED WITH WOMEN FOR WOMEN MEAN TO YOU?

There is undeniably an order or an authority in some societies, which needs to be balanced, even challenged by the counsel and action of women. Compared to the stories that I have read it is a very small thing to lend my name or face to this campaign. I would say it is more humbling than empowering

ARE THERE WOMEN WHO HAVE INSPIRED YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY?

It may seem obvious to say this but the way in which my mother retained her humour and delight in life even when she faced the greatest adversities, remains my inspiration.

WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION?

I look for inspiration by trying to create an understanding and appreciation of the stories and lessons of the past. By doing so, I know that I can move forward with confidence.

WHAT IS CURRENTLY INSPIRING YOU?

Truly, the joys and the sorrows of life. It sounds grandiose but it’s true. The loss of my father has been very difficult for me but in the next instant I have the intense joy of seeing my sons grow into such wonderful young boys.

WHAT IS YOUR MOMENT IN LIGHT – A DEFINING MOMENT OF SUCCESS OR HAPPINESS?

At the piano every night working, in the kitchen at suppertime, when I am home with my family and, of course, when the sun goes down…
