Décrivez-nous la coque de votre téléphone... 

Elle représente la Voie lactée. Je l'appelle ma "space case". Je suis obsédée par tout ce qui a un rapport avec les planètes. Si je n'avais pas été chanteuse, j'aurais été astronaute. 

Quel fond d'écran avez-vous choisi? 

Une photo de mes jumeaux, qui ont 10 ans. Ils sont emmitouflés dans des doudounes, en hiver, à Vancouver. 

Votre dernier SMS envoyé? 

C'est un mémo vocal: je chante "Joyeux anniversaire" au piano. Destinataire: Barbra Streisand! 

Vos trois applis incontournables? 

Hipstamatic. Je prends des photos à longueur de journée, en studio, pendant mes concerts, en voyage... TeamSnap, qui donne accès au calendrier des matchs de baseball de l'un de mes fils. Et Apple TV, pour suivre les vidéos fitness de Jane Fonda en maillot lycra fluo. C'est grâce à elle que j'ai ce corps de rêve! [Rires] 

Agenda électronique ou fidèle au papier? 

Ni l'un ni l'autre. Je note mes rendez-vous dans un cahier, plein de ratures car mon planning change sans arrêt. Mon manager a un sens de l'organisation bien meilleur que le mien... 

Le dernier album ajouté à votre playlist? 

Semper Femina, le nouveau disque de la chanteuse folk Laura Marling. Sa voix est sublime. J'ai des milliers de chansons sur mon téléphone, organisées en listes. Je passe ma vie à écouter de la musique: Django Reinhardt, Paul McCartney, Julie London, les Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald... 

L'endroit improbable où vous avez oublié un jour votre smartphone? 

Dans ma baignoire! Par chance, elle était vide... Je ne sais vraiment pas comment il a pu atterrir là. Je le perds sans cesse. Si je n'avais pas l'appli "localiser mon smartphone", je deviendrais folle!

Diana Krall vuelve al jazz clásico en su nuevo disco, ‘Turn up the quiet’, un puñado de clásicos en los que la cantante ha volcado todo su talento. Hablamos con ella de música, de su familia y de lo que significa el éxito.

Diana Krall (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, 1964) ha transitado del pop al jazz sin perder nunca su identidad, su personal manera de hablar de sí misma o de reinterpretar el jazz clásico. Esta vez vuelve con un disco de versiones de grandes clásicos del jazz norteamericano, que forman parte de la memoria colectiva de generaciones enteras. Turn up the quiet, a la venta el 5 de mayo, es un disco grabado en un momento de plenitud artística y personal, aunque su salida coincide con una gran tristeza para la cantante, por el reciente fallecimiento, a los 80 años, del productor, y gran amigo durante 25 años, Tommy LiPuma, una figura clave en el mundo del jazz y del pop, que vendió más de 75 millones de discos y trabajó con figuras como Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis o Paul McCartney. La cantante habla de cómo fue trabajar juntos por última vez, reprimiendo apenas los sollozos, y reflexiona sobre el verdadero significado del éxito, del arte y de su emotiva relación con España, donde terminará su gira de cinco meses, por Estados Unidos y Europa, el próximo 17 de octubre, en Barcelona.

Este disco está lleno de alegría y a la vez coincide con un momento triste por la pérdida de Tommy LiPuma.

Bueno…. Es muy difícil para mí hablar de ello. Estoy destrozada, pero, al mismo tiempo, ambos teníamos el convencimiento de que este era nuestro mejor disco, y lo disfrutamos mucho. Me gustaría que estuviera aquí para celebrarlo conmigo, pero los dos lo celebramos: de alguna manera, éramos conscientes de que se trataba de mucho más que un proceso artístico. Cada noche bebíamos vino juntos, comíamos juntos. Era algo más que estar en un estudio. Él amaba todo lo que es importante en la vida.

Su relación fue muy importante en su carrera.

Él sabía muy bien quién era yo como mujer y como artista desde hace 25 años, la mitad de mi vida, y cómo había sido mi evolución, y me ayudó siempre. Sabía de mi necesidad de tranquilidad y tiempo, y tenía la paciencia de respetar mi proceso creativo, muy intuitivo, no verbal, improvisado en el sentido más profundo.

Vuelve usted al jazz con grandes clásicos. ¿Por qué ha escogido este repertorio?

Creo que estaba preparada artísticamente para interpretar estos clásicos. En la historia del jazz mucha gente los ha interpretado, desde Nat King Cole a Charlie Parker o John Coltrane. Creo que son una forma extraordinaria y siempre nueva de expresarse artísticamente, porque tienen unas letras bellísimas, románticas, con una gran profundidad, y te ofrecen la oportunidad de improvisar con tu propio estilo.

¿Qué ha querido decir con el título Turn up the quiet (algo así como «Sube el volumen del silencio»)?

Es el verso de una canción del músico brasileño Ivan Lins, Love Dance. Se puede interpretar de muchas maneras, pero pienso que el silencio y la quietud permiten expresar de la forma más poderosa los sentimientos más intensos. No necesitas levantar la voz o gritar para transmitir a la gente esas emociones tan importantes. Pero, como digo, es un título abierto a interpretaciones.

¿Quizá se ha sentido ahora, en este momento de su carrera, más madura artísticamente para transmitir estas emociones a flor de piel?

Sí, totalmente. Con más experiencia, más centrada vitalmente, para sentir que este no es otro disco más, no es un disco de género, sino la expresión de todas las cosas que soy. Es todo lo que puedo dar en 11 canciones con tres bandas diferentes. Me siento muy afortunada por haber podido reunirlas y conseguir que todo el trabajo fuera muy coherente.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción?

Fue fantástico, al poder trabajar con Tommy LiPuma, que lo entendió tan bien. Fue todo muy natural, no había un plan previo, tardé varios meses en escoger las canciones, en ensayarlas, hacer pruebas, grabarlas. Hubo mucho trabajo de preproducción. Y el trabajo en el estudio fue muy divertido e interesante. Los arreglos surgieron de forma muy espontánea. Cuando existe complicidad con el equipo y la banda, no tienes que decir mucho, salvo captar la vibración, el ritmo, y el sentimiento. Grabábamos, luego escuchábamos y yo decía: «Creo que esto hay que volver hacerlo de esta manera o de aquella». Se trataba de crear un ambiente. Yo veía las canciones desde un punto de vista muy cinematográfico.

¿Qué recuerdos personales tiene de todas estas canciones?

Bueno, por ejemplo, con Isn’t it romantic siempre pensaba en Bobby Short, el cantante y pianista afroamericano, al que yo iba a escuchar cuando era una niña, y recuerdo su forma de interpretar llena de naturalidad. Y Night and Day me parece una canción muy sensual, erótica y profunda. No quería hacer música para otra generación, sino para gente de hoy capaz de apreciarla con toda su belleza. No se trataba de hacer algo nostálgico.

Su gira, que comienza en junio, termina con un concierto en Barcelona, una ciudad con la que tiene una relación muy especial y, en general, con España.

Sí, es fantástico, probablemente mis mejores recuerdos están ligados a Barcelona y, más recientemente, a San Sebastián. Tocar en España es siempre maravilloso, allá dónde voy el público es muy emotivo y apasionado y entiende muy bien mi trabajo. Me encanta todo sobre España, ¡y siempre que regreso a casa vuelvo con un montón de comida española! La verdad es que estoy impaciente, tengo una larga relación con mis fans españoles, siempre han sido muy leales conmigo en todos mis discos, por distintos que fueran. Siempre quiero darles lo mejor de mí.

Diana Krall might very well be the single greatest song interpreter in a post-Nina-Simone world. The slow bluesy swagger set to a jazz swing that other artist feign, drips wholeheartedly from every note she plays and word she sings. She’s an artist that’s as familiar with The Great American songbook as she is artists of her generation, it’s like she’s the sad piano player in a bar where Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Louis Armstrong and Cole Porter meet-up each night to drink whiskey and chain smoke into the wee hours of the next morning. She could reinvent the role of Sam in a (perish the thought) “Casablanca” remake, where she sits in the empty bar playing “As Time Goes By” for whatever testosterone filled action star they cast to play Humphry Bogart’s iconic role.

All of that said, Krall is performing this Tuesday July 28th at Kentucky Center for the Arts – and she took a few minutes from her hectic road schedule to do an interview.


Louisville.com: You've been doing a lot of more modern songwriters like Dylan, Leon Russell, Tom Waits and Depeche Mode in concert lately - how do guys like that stand up next Irving to Berlin, Cole Porter, Nat King Cole?
Diana Krall: Well I’ve been playing a Bob Dylan tune next to a Cole Porter tune as a sort of mash-up. But you can’t say, “songwriters like Bob Dylan,” because there’s only one Bob Dylan. I would put people like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits in the same regard as guys like Irving Berlin. They’re very different songwriters, but I certainly would put them in high regard like that.

Louisville.com: Stylistically they are very, very different songwriters.
DK: Yeah, but politically they’re not as much. If you look at the lyrics to “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” by Irving Berlin and put it next to “Simple Twist of Fate” they’re both pretty heavy.

Louisville.com: It’s funny you bring up “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” because I fell in love with your music the first time I heard your version, were you aware when you recorded it how perfect you were for that song?
DK: Not really, but I am playing it a lot now and I find that it is very significant. What’s beautiful about that music, you’ve got to find these things that aren’t just period pieces, some of them are pretty significant. I’m playing this song “Let It Rain” that was written in 1928, I found it in 1978 in my father’s records, and I can’t think of a more appropriate time to sing it. So a lot of these songs, I find, are appropriate for the times and they stay that way. But there are songs that I would never sing, just because I wouldn’t dare.

Louisville.com: What are the songs you wouldn’t dare?
DK: Like specific to Billie Holiday. Some of the songs that Billie Holiday wrote. There are certain Joni Mitchell songs I wouldn’t sing because they’re so true to her experience; they’re confidential. But then there’s one called “A Case of You,” I sing it probably every night, it’s like a David Hare play where you’re always finding a new way into it. It’s like a great short story that you just read aloud.

The interesting thing about playing Joni Mitchell’s music is that she’s coming from a jazz ear, ya’ know? Bob Dylan, too. They’re still alive, in their early 70’s, but they heard people like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, when they were still living and playing. I mean they were out playing jazz…can you imagine?

Louisville.com: Also creative revolutionary musicians like Miles Davis...
DK: And Miles Davis, too! I never saw Miles Davis, I don’t think, but Miles Davis to me…as a kid I saw this Miles Davis documentary and the impact it had on me was so tremendous. That it was the same old discussion, “Why is Miles Davis playing pop songs? Why isn’t he playing old standards?” I remember being sixteen years old watching this thing. Louis Armstrong played pop songs, he played some horrible pop songs and he played some great pop songs, but every single thing he played sounded like him. Nat Cole the same. They just put magic into it. Miles Davis is a great example of someone that just moves forward; he was soul searching whether you like it or not.

Louisville.com: Growing up were you drawn more toward the current artists of the day?
DK: Not at all. I was listening to Fats Waller on a reel-to-reel recorder. I was listening to the stuff my dad had. Then I started listening to Elton John and that changed my world.

Louisville.com: Those early Elton John records changed a lot of worlds.
DK: I got “Blue Moves” for my twelfth birthday. Who asks for that? You’re twelve years old and you can’t wait to hear “Blue Moves” and it’s the saddest work he ever did.

Louisville.com: What are some of your favorite compliments you’ve gotten from peers?
DK: I was on tour opening for Neil Young, and we didn’t say a whole lot to each other – because I’m not really one for words, either, I’d rather sing them. But I’d walk off stage and I’d see him for a second and he would look at me, “You’re gettin’ it now, Diana.” I was like…living the dream. There are times that I still feel like a sixteen year old kid, my body doesn’t feel like that, but my spirit certainly does.

Louisville.com: And for the record you have Stuart Duncan on this tour, who is almost universally regarded as the finest fiddle player alive.
DK: Of course! You should hear him play on “Just You, Just Me,” he tears it up. I don’t know what he’s playing, he’s playing “Stuart Duncan” and doing it over jazz changes and killing it…and he’s singing great, he’s just a joy to have. We can go anywhere. Sometimes I forget to come in because I’m just sitting there watching him with my jaw wide open.

Louisville.com: That seems like a pretty good problem to have.
DK: Yes it is!
